What is everyone dressing up as for Halloween?
Anonymous asked: As a junior in high school, would colleges think it bad if I didn't take a science course? My schedule didn't have enough room for a science course. I signed up for a science course (Physical Science) online but I'm thinking about dropping it; I have two other AP classes and many extracurricular activities going on as well.
Anonymous asked: Our school offered a Calculus class. I suck at math. Like I'm so bad at it every time I look at a problem I can't comprehend the question and its like I'm dyslexic, but in math. So I didn't take a math class. How do you think this will look on my application?

I can't decide! For the longest time I was convinced I was going to go to BC, but I found out that it's a religious college and 70% of the students are catholic, and i'm an atheist, which made me worry I...

melpanel asked: Hi! I'm a junior attending a very academically challenging public high school. So far I've taken 5 AP/AICE classes with all A's and B's (one C in Bio). This year I'm taking 5 more, and senior year I'll also be taking 5. I plan on passing most of these, and getting A's and B's. I'm the Treasurer of TOM's Club at my school, and I am also involved in...

Anonymous asked: I have a very bad GPA, its around 2.8 and my SAT score and TOEFL is yet to come. I think they are bad... After knowing my GPA was so bad and believing that the SAT and TOEFL are bad i stopped applying to several universities, simply because I don't qualify. Do you have any recommendations? or anything I should do?
calceamenta-rubra asked: I make straight As, but I go to a tiny charter school in Arizona, which is ranked pretty low education wise. Do I still have a chance getting into some top private colleges like Amherst and Barnard?

Clive Thompson discusses the merits of using a diagram to solve complex problems—from global warming to health care reform and more.
Our culture relies too heavily on words: Our school systems—and political systems—are designed to promote people who are verbal and eloquent. And text tends to encourage us to describe our problems as narratives or linear lists of facts.
Anonymous asked: I don't have any college in mind. I'm applying to all types of schools, Ivies, schools right under Ivies, safety schools. All my friends say I should be applying early decision to an Ivy league school. Is it bad that I don't have a top choice? Even If i made it into an Ivy league, i know i could do just as well anywhere else.
mysunandstarss asked: Hello,
I live in Mongolia and my school doesn't offer any kind of AP classes. There wasn't many options as well for which classes we could take for our senior year. Do you think colleges will think that I got lazy and didn't take hard classes after seeing my midterm report? I mean our school doesn't offer them so I didn't have much of a choice.

cw12 asked: My school has been on a 4x4 block schedule from my freshman year to junior year. This year I have seven periods to balance, four of them being AP classes, the other being my worst subject, math (which for me this year is Calculus), then I'm taking Spanish IV and I have an internship. My grades right now consist of a couple As, one B and several mid Cs. But all through high school I've...

Anonymous asked: I want to get into NC State, but I'm scared my suspension will ruin those chances. Last year, I got suspended for 10 days, kicking a guy in the crotch. That is the ONLY bad thing I've done in high school. My GPA weight is 4.25 and I am 11th in class rank. I am also involved with other extra curricular activities and work.. Do I still have a chance of getting in?
Anonymous asked: I'm a senior in high school and am starting my college applications. I've maintained a 4.0 since freshman year and have a combined SAT score of 1950. I have been involved in a variety of school clubs, participate in symphonic band, and have been the captain of the color guard for three years (which takes up 400+ hours of work per year). However, I am concerned about my attendance. Since...
Anonymous asked: I've been reading about people like BIll Gates that change the world and went to Ivy League schools. I feel like they're the only people I can really relate to in terms of working with other people. I know I'm going to change the field of psychiatry and eventually how people think. I'm really smart, I know a lot about psychology, and I'm like the top of everything. But my...
